Can't you find a way to recover desktop files? Here you will learn how to recover deleted or lost files/folders from the desktop from the previous version or with powerful third-party data recovery software in Windows 10/8/7/XP/Vista.
SummaryLost desktop folder and files without backup, how to recover?
'My desktop looked as usual after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10. But after the first reboot, everything on the desktop was gone!!! I lost all my folders, and all shortcuts disappeared. I checked the recycle bin and Windows.old folder, nothing was found. A lot of precious pictures and home videos of my families for many years were among the lost desktop files and I had no backup file.
It is really unacceptable. Is there anyone who can tell me how to recover deleted files from the desktop in Windows 10?'
Recently, many users reported that they lost their files and shortcuts on the desktop after upgrading their computer to Windows 10. It seems that Windows 10 upgrade deletes desktop files.
On this page, we will introduce you how to recover deleted or lost files from the desktop from the previous version or with powerful third-party data recovery software with the step-by-step tutorials. Follow and try it out now!
Method 1. Recover desktop files or folders in Windows 10/7 from the previous version
When you deleted a folder/file on your desktop or got your desktop files lost for other reasons, you can try to retrieve them for free from the previous version.
Requiring no data recovery software, it should be your first choice for desktop file recovery. Avast free antivirus expires. Here we will show you how to make it.
1. Create a new folder on the desktop and name it with the same name of the deleted folder.
2. Select the folder, right-click on it and navigate to 'Properties' > 'Previous Versions'. And then Windows will search for and list the previous versions of the deleted or lost files or folders.
3. Choose the latest one and click 'Restore' to recover deleted files from Desktop.
Method 2. Recover desktop files or folders with Window 10/7 data recovery software
The above method is free and easy for desktop file recovery. But it has a shortcoming. As you can see from the tutorial, you have to remember the name of all the deleted files or folders.
If you cannot recover deleted files in Windows 10/8/7 from the previous version, don't worry! You have a second choice - to recover lost or deleted files from the desktop with third-party Window data recovery software.
Here we recommend you to try EaseUS file recovery software. Being powerful, safe and easy-to-use, it can help you retrieve all your precious data in just 3 simple steps. Try it whenever you can't find or access a file or folder on your computer desktop or hard drive in Windows 10/8/7/XP/Vista. Besides, to recover deleted files Mac, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard for Mac is available to you.
Step 1. Run folder recovery software.
Step 2. Find lost folder.
Step 3. Recover the lost folder.
Last, select the folder and choose to save it to a new & secure spot on your PC by clicking 'Recover'.
Yes, Windows 8.1 completely removes the 'Windows 7 File Recovery' from the control panel.
(Along with the insistence that you link a Microsoft Account during installation to, necessarily, use their cloud I can't believe that this is anything but their evil marketing department making these choices rather than a heartfelt concern for the best user experience.)
Windows 7 Backup and Restore deprecated:
How are we supposed to back up baremetal to an external drive now?? I don't see where this functionality is replaced.
I've tried WBADMIN commands but for example with
wbAdmin delete systemstatebackup -keepVersions:3 (or wbAdmin delete backup -keepVersions:3 )
I get:
Warning: The DELETE SYSTEMSTATEBACKUP command is not supported in this version of Windows. The operation ended before completion.
Find Recovery Folder Windows 7
Are there other commands that replace this functionality?
An immediate problem is that I have a Windows Action flagged to 'check my backup results' which does nothing when I click it and I can't dismiss it. Next, I have a backup scheduled and I don't know if the backup schedule will be kept now in 8.1, but if it does, it will fill up my backup drive if I can't
wbAdmin delete systemstatebackup them.
Thanks!

It is still here but hidden. You have to go to the File History options, here you see a link:

A couple of points:
IIRC, the file format for the backups was 'vhd' which is a virtual disk format. It's been on my list to try mounting a 'backup' file as virtual disk (most VM porducts can read these, eg vmware, vrtualbox, hyperv, virtual-pc). I did some experiments with this years ago at it looked promising, but I never pursued it. I guess I'll have to resurrect that effort.
I think this is another example of how MS product management has gone overboard on the end-user tablet-oriented functionality at the cost of the enterprise user and manager.

Hello, first time poster
I have a Samsung Ultrabook running windows 7 with a 1TB Seagate external HDD which contains every single information and media whereas I only install programs on the laptop itself due to its low 128GB SSD. One day I decided to plug my external HDD to my tv directly through usb to watch a movie, while accessing a specified folder, the tv froze and couldn’t do anything else, so I unplug the HDD and restart the tv and no longer watched the movie. The next day I plug the external HDD to my laptop and one of the folders is showing a blank page icon with 0 bytes of data and it’s type is File and when double clicked, prompts to choose a program to open this file. All other files and folders are intact but realized they all have a file in them called “desktop.ini” and all my songs show their album art picture next to it.
Extra piece of information to know is that my external HDD is partitioned into A, B, C. and every partition has a list of folders with subfolders in them. So the folder that is showing a blank icon is in partition A and is also the partition that has the “desktop.ini” in every folder.
Now I am very sure that the files inside the blank icon folder are still there because the remaining space on that partition is still the same and a recovery software is still showing them but under a different hidden folder name with all the original sub-folder names. It is showing them under directory: A:found.000dir0000.chkOriginal Subfolder name, where “found.000dir0000.chk” is the directory I don’t know. And the recovery software “Piriform Recuva” is showing them as Not Deleted, so I can’t recover them. So I think that just the folder’s directory is corrupted.
I have tried and delete IconCache from AppData – Local and restart computer thinking it was an icon issue but didn’t work.
Now the main reason I said all these is if someone can help me in recovering that folder and be able to access it as its content are important.
Thank for your help in advance and appreciate it.
